Some Natural And Some Supernatural, All About Fear
The Outsider, Book Or Movie? Or Both?
Since the beginning of book based productions on the television, it is a non ending doubt to compare the book and the visual production. For book readers, after reading a book, watching the same story on television is generally risky. The story in front of the eyes may be too far away from the image and the feeling that reading process created, this can make the reader find the production scattered.
Most of the readers who read the book "The Outsider" from Stephen King, must have thought that this should be produced as a television series. When they learnt that it will be done under HBO, who really has big success in staging detective stories, they must have got more and more excited. So, all happened and thanks God, the series "The Outsider" is on the stage. It is also a remarkable point, that the director/executive producer and the producer of the production are also acting in the series. As the series is premiered in January 2020, it was obvious that this will be one of the biggest and one of the most popular productions of the year.
The story begins in Oklahoma, focused on a police detective, Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn, who is also the producer of the series) who arrested the beloved teacher and baseball coach Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman, who is also the director and executive producer of the series) accusing him of raping and killing a boy. Law always had an image of thick books and unknown words, but beginning with John Grisham books, such productions made us learn more about the law system and they always created a foggy atmosphere which we never felt sure of guiltiness or innocense. Success chance of detective stories is mostly based on this vague and dubious feeling that the audience felt. If it is a visual production, acting performances also have big effect on the success and in this series the cast really did a good job.
Worth To Watch
Beginning with focusing on a fully real and very common story, like most of Stephen King works, mystic and supernatural issues get inside the subject. This can make the audience a little bit surprised in a negative way, but we should keep in our mind that this is a Stephen King story. If you are an addicted reader of King's books who has a strong memory, you can easily identify some names and issues from his other books too. We have to mention that this critical knife edge situation between the daily realities and mystic supernatural happenings is adroitly and masterfully managed by HBO.
Most of the audience of "The Outsider" felt strong positive feelings to find the similar taste with the beloved series "True Detective" again from HBO. Most common negative review for the book may be about its final, which is mainly evaluated as hollow or inadequate. To be honest and objective, this series should be followed with remembering that it is not a simple and bare detective series, but a story which is based on a Stephen King book.
